Susan Kare is an artist
and graphic designer who created many of the interface elements for the Apple
Macintosh in the 1980s. She was born on
April 6, 1954. She has created thousands of icons and in 2001 was named the recipient
of the Chrysler design award. Susan Kare
is best known for the “trash icon”, she is called the "The
mother of the Mac trash can"
In a New York Times article
from 7/6/13, Susan Kare stated that Paul Rand is a graphic design hero of
hers. She listens to Al Green, she
follows Reddit’s “Ask me anything” feature and she enjoyed the TV series “the
Wire”.
This is a quote from Susan
Kare when asked if she had any feeling at the time that the work she was doing
at Apple would be so pervasively influential. “You can set out to make a painting, but you
can’t set out to make a great painting," she said. "If you look at
that blank canvas and say, 'Now I’m going to create a masterpiece’--that’s just
foolhardy. You just have to make the best painting you can, and if you’re
lucky, people will get the message."
Currently, she is the
head of a digital design practice in San Francisco and sells signed prints at www.kareprints.com
Below are some of the
icons she created.
Wonderful job... I love that you found a NY Times interview and brought some of her personality in to the review!
